ANTI-CULTURE STATE OPERATION AGAINST AFMM

Dear colleagues,

Regretfully I inform you that today on the 21st of February 2009 an unprecedented act happened in the premises of the Academy of Film and Multimedia “MARUBI” in Albania,
The State Police forces came to close our Film Academy under the pretext that we are using
illegally part of our premises in the ex-Kinostudio. The State Police used brutal force and violence towards the students, the professors and particularly to the Rector Kujtim Çashku.

This vulgar display of power was filmed and shown on different TV Channels.

Understandably, this use of force is a violation of the Albanian Constitution Law, Education law and Civic Procedures, too.

The “MARUBI” Academy remains as of now, still surrounded by the police forces. The students and the professors are still on the premises continuing the strike. We intent to resist through it all, in order to keep alive the first and the only Academy of Film in
Albania.
We are happy that we have the support of the other universities, artists and intellectuals
in Albania and from all around the world.
We are also grateful for the support we had from our school’s co-founders and principal donors, the governments of Germany, France, Switzerland, UK and the U.S.
Representatives from their Embassies participated in the human bondage, with professors, students, artists to prevent the forceful entry in our Campus. The ambassadors of these countries wrote statements to the prime minister S. Berisha, which is responsible for all
this intervention against our independent academy.

Dear Colleagues,

The Academy of Film & Multimedia “MARUBI” a member of CILECT, GEECT and SEEC risks
to be closed by the unlawful acts of the Albanian Government.
We ask for your support in our efforts to keep the Academy of Film and Multimedia
“MARUBI” open and functional so we can continue our mission of preparing the new generation of filmmakers in Albania.
